Kreta Ayer was host to traditional craftsmen of various trades that saw the change of Singapore’s economic activities; street letter writers who were the only points of contacts for the migrants to their loved ones at home but gradually replaced by new schools as their hard labor brought prosperity to their next generation and literacy through formal schooling replaced the roles of the letter writers.
